Anxiety. A word that triggers different reactions in all of us. For some, it’s a fleeting feeling of unease; for others, a paralyzing force that dominates everyday life. But one thing all anxiety experiences have in common: they are deeply human.
What is Anxiety Actually?
Anxiety is a basic emotion that is meant to protect us from potential dangers. In an acute danger situation, it puts us on alert, sharpens our senses, and enables us to react quickly — whether by flight or fight (the so-called “fight-or-flight” response). This reaction is evolutionarily deeply rooted in us and has ensured the survival of our ancestors.
The Different Faces of Anxiety — Anxiety is not always the same. There are different forms and manifestations:
- Normal Anxiety:
It is situational and a natural reaction to stress or threats. Exam anxiety, stage fright, or worry about a loved one are examples. - Anxiety Disorders:
When anxiety occurs excessively, persistently, and without reason, and significantly impairs everyday life, it is called an anxiety disorder. These include, for example:
